Fair Trade
Products like coffee, tea and chocolate, that we in the north have come to depend on, are produced in the warmer climates of the South. The prices paid for these commodities have not risen in real terms over the last forty years, whilst the value of fertilisers, pesticides and machinery (imported from richer countries) has increased substantially. On top of this the market price of commodities frequently drops below the cost of producing them. Consequently many of the people who grow these crops are having to work harder and longer for less money.

Frederick Forsyth
Frederick Forsyth was born in August 1938 in Ashford, Kent, England. He started work as one of the youngest pilots in the RAF at the age of 19, serving from 1956 to 1958. He worked as a reporter for the Eastern Daily Press in Norfolk, before becoming a correspondant for Reuters in 1961. In 1965, he worked as a radio and television reporter for the BBC. As assistant diplomatic correspondent, he covered the Biafran side of the Biafra-Nigeria war from July to September 1967, and this provided him with knowledge of international politics, and the world of mercenary soldiors. In 1968 he left the BBC to return to Biafra. The Biafra Story marked Frederick Forsyth's transition from journalist to author. An insightful record of the Biafran War, which Nigeria fought to prevent the secession of its eastern province, it also voices Forsyth's outrage at the extremes of human violence as well as the duplicity of the Western governments who tacitly accepted or actively aided that violence. The research and experience of this work later found expression in another of Forsyth's work, the eminently successful novel about the mercenaries, "The Dogs of War".
