SCRAP
The estimates of available HMS1+2 scrap resources in West Africa is enormous. Liberia for
example has at least 1 million ton available.
SCRAP MELTING FACILITY
Not only Liberia but the whole West African region is filled with high grade quality scrap
(HMS1: High Meltage Steel) mainly from the many mines in the region. Presently most scrap is exported
to emerging markets like China and India. The average purchase price of scrap per January 2007 is
$190.00 per ton FOB. If Liberia would have a regional scrap melting processing plant it would be able to
produce and sell steel billets. With an estimated deposit of 25million ton presently
lying around in the region, the plant could process 1million ton per year for decades to come.
