In 2000, a 10 year devastating civil war finally stopped and brought peace to Sierra Leone. As one of the few countries in
West Africa, the Sierra Leone Government seriously started to end corruption and bribery, especially at Lungui International
Airport. Slowly some bigger investors return to Sierra Leone while especially the Chinese are hard on their way to become
the 'Asian Lebanese' of West Africa. It is expected that in 2005 Rutile will re-activate dredging, and Dutch TamiCorp Holding
started a mineral mining project 'upland', providing employment for over 250 rural people.

While God created the world, one day after lunch he was resting in Sierra Leone. To sit a bit comfortable he shaped
a mountain in his back and overlooked the surrounding but he did not like what he saw. He saw flat land and the ocean
and decided to change it into a paradise to please his eyes. Since then Sierra Leone became one of the most beautiful
places on earth. He put all kind of valuables in the ground for the future inhabitants and thats why Sierra Leone is
en-ridged with precious natural resources like palms, rubber, gold, diamonds, rutile, bauxite and iron ore and much more.
Since then volcanic rocks give rise to impressive landscapes. The mountains behind Freetown rise to a maximum height of over
900 metres above sea level and the landscape, which includes high peaks and ridges separated by deep, picturesque valleys,
is frequently spectacular.
In 1787 the English transferred 351 freed slaves and European settlers to the area now known as Sierra Leone. A Creole
society was born from this, which collected in Free Town. In 1896 the area around Free Town became an English protectorate.
The taxes, which the English imposed, started a revolt which the English stopped immediately but which forced them to take
over the whole region.

If you visit Freetown we can advice you to stay in the Aberdeen area at the cape where several hotels are located with
some fine restaurant and Lumley Beach around the corner. Five hotels deserve the title good- Kimbima (+323-22-234658/236507 ask for Tina Davies),
Solar, Bintumani, Family Kingdom and Cape Sierra Light House. So far we valued the food in the Kimbima restaurant as very good (2 stars) with
Solar Hotel on a second place. But you also can eat a fresh and well prepared snapper with sea view at some
nice beach restaurants at Lumley Beach. Our priviliged beach bar and for African food, still is Paradise Beach Bar
(ask for Musa). For dancing and gambling we can advice Buggy's Retaurant, Paddy's and Lagoonda. When arriving at Lungui Airport you can take
the ferry to Freetown and from there
a taxi to Aberdeen or fligh by helicopter with Paramount Airlines what only takes 15 minutes. Sometimes a Hovercraft is on
service which brings you also smoothly from Lungui to Aberdeen. Aberdeen is the safest area in Freetown due to its
strategic position and that is also why the UN Unamsil HQ is based there.
