To improve the conditions of Children and Youths living in desperate circumstances in Fizi territory, South-Kivu Province in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo
INTRODUCTION
SOS JED is the official acronym of the Organization, starting for "SOS JEUNESSE ET ENFANCE EN DETRESSE". The English version "YOUTH AND CHILDHOOD IN DISTRESS" YOCHID is also valid.
SOS JED is registered as non-profit, apolitical and philanthropic organization, according to the Order in Council of September 18, 1965 in rule for non-profit organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Created in 1989, SOS JED endeavors to tackle problems affecting the lives of Children and Adolescents in Fizi territory. Recurrent armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo since as early as the country’s access to independence in 1960 have had long straining effects in the particular Fizi territory.
Problems range from (but no limited to) no access to basic facilities, lack of education, no access to health services, unemployment and unproductively, drug addiction, to non respect for human rights, democracy and involvement in civil and political wars in Fizi, which has given ground to the worst forms of torture and abuse against them by different military forces in opposition.
It is in such a context that SOS JED offers itself as an UMBRELLA, under which Children and Youth find shelter, are cared for, meet each other, discover and develop their potentialities, acquire knowledge and skills, know their rights and are well prepared to fully participate in the war-torn society as partners in development.
